Description

Type Fighter is a 80's inspired bullet hell arcade game that designed for 2 players. One player must pilot the ship and fire the on board weapons, whilst the other player can activate various abilities by typing commands into the ship's console. The real question is, can you beat Type Fighter single handedly?

History

Game Jam

Type Fighter was created as part of an end of year game jam at our university (UWE) in which the theme was 80's arcade and cyber security. We took various words / ideas associated with cyber security and turned them into unique abilities. For example, the systemscan.exe command will cause all the ships projectiles to home onto enemies, and antivirus.exe will activate explosive ammunition. It became apparent very early on that the game would have require 2 players to allow all the possible abilities to be included and as a result, the typing portion of the game would have to be as engaging and the piloting of the ship. After a week a jamming, out first build of Type Fighter was completed.

What followed

Type Fighter was awarded best game of the jam and as a result, we we're all offered places to continue our work at PlayWest. We went on to develop another 2 games with arcade-y/cyber security themes, Spamphibian and GOOST.
